One Piece Card Game Tournaments: Organizing Your Leader, DON!! and Deck

Round 3 just ended, and the game went down to the last life card. You sweep everything up in one motion: characters, trash, DON!! on the table, remaining life. Thirty seconds later the next pairings go up, and you are no longer quite sure all 50 cards made it back.

Short answer: a One Piece Card Game tournament deck is one leader, a 50-card main deck and 10 DON!! cards. The main deck must be sleeved uniformly; the leader and DON!! take different sleeves, or none at all. It all fits in one box, as long as the three stay clearly apart.

What a One Piece tournament deck contains

The leader

A single card, but it sets which colors your deck can use and how many life cards you start with. It never gets shuffled into the deck, so give it a fixed spot in the box.

The 50-card main deck

Exactly 50 cards, with no more than 4 copies of the same card number. This is the pile to recount between rounds, because it is the one that scatters most during a game: hand, character area, trash and life.

The 10 DON!! cards

The DON!! deck is your resource. It is drawn separately, attached to characters, and goes back to its own pile at the end of the game. The risk is real: a DON!! slipping into the main deck, or a main deck card ending up in the DON!! pile.

Life cards

They do not add to the count. At the start of the game you take as many cards from the top of the main deck as your leader's life value, face down. They are main deck cards, and they need to go back in when the game ends.

Sleeves: the rule that surprises newcomers

Here, the publisher's tournament rules ask for the opposite of what most players expect for the leader and DON!!: either sleeves that differ from the main deck, or no sleeves at all. The logic is simple: none of these cards should ever be mistaken for a main deck card.

For the main deck, the rule is the usual one: opaque sleeves, all the same model. Double sleeving is allowed, up to two sleeves per card. If you play cards you care about, it is the best insurance against a full day of shuffling; our double sleeve guide covers the combinations that hold up.

Tip: pick a sleeve color for your DON!! that clearly contrasts with your deck, and end-of-game sorting becomes a glance. Rules change over time, so check the current version before every event.

Organizing the box: three spots, not one

Leader, 50 cards and 10 DON!! make 61 cards. Our deck boxes hold up to 125 double-sleeved cards, with an internal volume of 76 x 68 x 98 mm: the spare room lets you pack without squeezing sleeves and keep three distinct groups:

  1. The leader in front, face up: it tells you which deck you are holding the moment you open the box.
  2. The main deck in the middle, as a single block of 50.
  3. The DON!! at the back, set apart by sleeve color or a divider.

Dice and power counters, allowed on the table with your opponent's approval, can travel in a small pouch. For the rest of your gear, our tournament checklist goes through it game by game.

Tournament day: a between-rounds routine

The recommended format for sanctioned events is best-of-one, with 35-minute rounds plus 5 minutes of extra time. Mistakes creep in during the few minutes of packing up between rounds. A fixed routine solves it:

  1. Put remaining life cards, your hand, the character area and the trash back into the main deck.
  2. Detach every DON!! from your characters and gather them in their pile.
  3. Count the DON!!: 10.
  4. Count the main deck: 50, once, calmly.
  5. Pack in order (leader, deck, DON!!) and close the box.

A box with a snap-fit lid, no magnets, will not pop open at the bottom of your bag between tables. For the trip to the store itself, our guide to transporting your cards to tournaments completes this routine.

Several leaders, several boxes

A new leader means new colors and often a whole new deck. One box per deck, each recognizable at a glance, keeps you from grabbing the wrong one. Box color, theme or lid engraving is enough to tell them apart. For a high-seas mood without any licensed reference, our pirate theme is full of ideas. And if you want a box that reflects your play style, our article on a custom One Piece TCG deck box covers the personalization side.

Build the box for your deck

In the Forge, you design your box with a live preview: color, theme, reliefs, lid engraving. Every piece is printed in premium PLA, hand-painted in our French workshop, photographed before shipping and sent with tracking. Production usually takes 5 to 10 business days, with a few extra days possible for fully hand-painted work, so plan ahead if a tournament is coming up.
