Moulded Plastic: The Default
This is the category as most players know it. Ultimate Guard, Gamegenic and others built it, and they built it well: available everywhere, consistent, inexpensive, in a range of capacities.
What you give up is identity. At a tournament table, your box is one of dozens that look exactly the same, and a sticker is about the extent of what you can do about it. Personalisation is not part of the model, because injection moulding only makes sense in volume.
Worth checking before you buy: many lids close with a magnet. It works well and it is convenient. It is also a moving part, which is a design decision rather than a flaw, and it is the one thing that separates two boxes that otherwise look alike.
Wood: Presence, and Grams
A hardwood box is an object. Grain, weight in the hand, laser engraving that catches the light: nothing in plastic comes close on a shelf or in a display cabinet.
The price is paid in three places. Weight, first, and a bag with three decks in it makes that argument on its own. Humidity, second, since wood moves with the seasons and a lid that fits in January can stick in July. And the hinge, third, which is the part that will age before the wood does.
Check the internal volume rather than the outer dimensions. A wooden box sized generously on the outside can still be tight for a double sleeved deck once you account for wall thickness.
Leather: The Patina Argument
Most leather deck boxes are a rigid shell wrapped in leather or a leather substitute. The appeal is real and it is specific: leather is one of the few materials that genuinely improves with handling, and a box carried for two years looks better than the day it arrived.
It is also the most expensive family, the one that asks for actual upkeep, and the one where personalisation usually stops at embossing initials. And the wrap adds thickness, so compare internal volumes rather than external ones here too.
3D Printing: When the Shape Becomes the Product
Printing changes the economics of a one off. Because the part is built layer by layer from a file, the geometry itself can be personalised: sculpted reliefs, an engraved lid, medallions, panels that swap out. That is not a variation on a moulded part, it is a different object each time.

What is the best deck box material for tournaments?
