How Our 3D Printed Deck Boxes Are Made
For a lot of players, "3D printed" still conjures a part pulled out of a garage machine: visible banding, soft edges, one flat filament colour. The underlying process really is the same one. Everything else is different. Here is how a deck box travels from build file to parcel in our workshop, in France.
Why Printing Instead of Moulding
An injection moulded box carries a heavy tooling cost, and that cost only makes sense across tens of thousands of strictly identical units. The mould also freezes the shape: add a relief, an engraving, a medallion, and you are paying for new tooling.
3D printing flips that equation. The investment sits in the design, not in the steel. Producing a box that differs from the previous one costs no more than producing the same one twice. That is precisely what a deck box built around one player requires: their theme, their colours, their reliefs, with no minimum order and no stock to clear.
The Build File: A Box Drawn Around the Cards
Geometry comes before material. The internal volume is 76 × 68 × 98 mm, the room needed for 125 standard cards double sleeved, tokens and dice included. That figure is not marketing rounding. It comes from the real stack height of a Commander deck wearing two layers of sleeves, plus the clearance you need to lift cards out without fighting the box.
The snap fit closure is decided in the same file. No magnet is involved: it is the fit between lid and body, tuned to a tenth of a millimetre, that gives the clean click and the hold inside a bag. A magnet weakens over time. A geometry does not.
Every configuration confirmed in the Forge then becomes a build file. Side panels, reliefs, lid engraving and medallions are part of the printed part itself, not glued on afterwards.
Printing: Premium PLA, 0.2 mm per Layer
The box is built layer by layer in premium PLA, at a 0.2 mm layer height. That is the optimal height for these parts: fine enough to keep sculpted reliefs and engravings legible, efficient enough to avoid tying up a machine for days over a difference nobody would see once the finish is on.
One box occupies a printer for several hours. Nothing is pulled from a batch: the part is started for your order, in the base colour you picked among the eleven available, Starlight effects included.
Two Finishes, Two Different Crafts
Inksmith: Painted by Hand
The printed part is then painted entirely by hand in acrylic, and protected with a non toxic varnish. Reliefs, engravings and highlights are brought out by drybrushing: barely any paint on the brush, dragged across the raised edges so they catch the colour while the recesses stay dark. That is what creates the aged, weathered, faintly vintage character.
The direct consequence is that no two boxes come out strictly identical. The hand varies, and that is the whole point.
Ironsmith: Colour Inside the Material
The other route prints the colour along with the part. Details are not laid on the surface, they sit in the material. The result is crisp, the contrasts are strong, and it produces artwork no brush would ever achieve. It calls for cutting edge printers and a longer print time, which is why it sits at the premium end.

Quality Control: A Photo Before the Parcel
Every piece is photographed before it ships. This is not a flourish. If the box you receive does not match the preview of your configuration, it is repainted or remade at our expense. The photo is the shared reference that makes that promise checkable.

Is a 3D printed deck box sturdy?
It is printed in premium PLA, a rigid material that holds its shape inside a bag. The shell is not a thin skin: wall thickness and the snap fit lid are dimensioned to take the pressure of a packed tournament bag without popping open.
Why a 0.2 mm layer height?
It is the optimal height for these parts. Go finer and print time climbs sharply with no visible gain on surfaces that will be painted or printed in colour. Go thicker and sculpted reliefs and engravings lose their crispness.
Is every box printed to order?
