Inksmith or Ironsmith: Which Finish Should You Pick for Your Deck Box?

Sooner or later, every player configuring a deck box in the Forge hits the same question: Inksmith or Ironsmith? Both finishes start from the same box, made in France, yet they produce two very different objects once they land in your hands. One embraces the brush stroke and the character of a weathered piece; the other pushes color straight into the material for contrast no brush could ever match. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide based on your deck, your theme and your taste.

Two finishes, one artisanal foundation

Before we pit them against each other, let's cover what never changes. Whichever finish you pick, your deck box is 3D printed in premium PLA at 0.12 mm layers for crisp detail, then hand-finished in our French workshop. It holds up to 125 standard double-sleeved cards, enough for a Commander deck with its tokens, a Standard deck, a Pokémon league deck or a Lorcana deck. The snap-fit closure is the same on both: no accidental openings in your bag or at a tournament table.

One more constant: the Forge shows you a live preview of your configuration, and every piece is photographed before shipping. If the box you receive doesn't match the preview, it gets repainted or remade at our expense. So the finish choice really comes down to one thing: the look.

Inksmith: the brush, the character

Inksmith is our signature artisanal finish. The box is entirely painted by hand: reliefs, engravings and highlights are all picked out with a brush, one by one. It's patient work, and it gives every piece a vintage, weathered character, like an object that has already survived a few campaigns.

The Inksmith palette offers ten paint colors: gold, silver, blue, sky blue, yellow, crimson red, flash green, flash pink, black and white. The metallics, gold and silver especially, shine on raised details, where the brush catches the light along every edge.

Here's the key thing to understand: no two Inksmith boxes are strictly identical. The micro-variations of the human hand are part of the look. If you want a one-of-a-kind piece in the literal sense, this is your finish.

Ironsmith: color built into the material

Ironsmith takes the opposite road. Here, details aren't painted on afterwards: they are printed directly into the material, in full color, on cutting-edge printers. The result is vivid, deep colors, sharp contrast and artwork that no brush could reproduce, especially complex or highly detailed visuals.

Color-wise, Ironsmith reliefs come in all eleven box colors, Starlight effects included: Nebula, Comet and Twilight bring their sparkle straight into the material. It's our premium finish, and it requires a longer print time than average.

What look are you after?

This is the first criterion, and often the only one that matters. Ancient grimoire vibes, guild chest, an object patinated by the years: Inksmith. Saturated colors, clean lines, artwork that pops on the table: Ironsmith. A dark, gold-trimmed dragon tribal deck will naturally lean toward hand painting, while a deck with a modern, colorful visual identity will get the most out of full-color printing.

How detailed is your visual?

The brush excels on reliefs, engravings and the play of light. Full-color printing excels on complex flat areas, gradients and rich illustrations. If you're torn, look at your reference visual: the more fine detail and distinct colors it contains, the stronger the case for Ironsmith.

What about turnaround?

Either way, every box is made to order in our workshop, generally within 10 business days. Premium finishes can add a few days, since an Ironsmith print takes longer. Nothing dramatic, but if your tournament is two weeks away, plan ahead.

Can you get it wrong?

Not really. Both finishes come out of the same workshop with the same standards, and more than 1,500 boxes have already been sold, with a 4.9/5 rating across 319 verified Etsy reviews. Quality isn't the question here; the only question is which style you want to put on the table.
