Gear Up Your Playgroup: Matching Deck Boxes for the Whole Table

There is a point in the life of a playgroup where the table becomes an institution. Same players, same evening, same running jokes, and decks that know each other by heart. What is usually missing is the outward sign that this table plays together: boxes that look like a team. That is exactly what a group order of custom deck boxes delivers.

A series, not clones

A good playgroup series is not the same box four times. It is one shared theme declined per player: same universe, same finish, and one variation that identifies everyone at first glance. The dragon player takes the scaled relief in green, the control player runs the same base in blue, the third goes black and gold across the board.

It all happens in the Forge, our configurator with live preview. You build the reference box once: theme, colours, reliefs, perhaps a shared artwork on the side panels. From there, duplicating a configuration takes one click. Each copy becomes the starting point for one player's variation, without ever starting from scratch. If the configurator is new to you, our step by step guide to the Forge walks through every stage.

Paint matching, the secret of great series

Our Inksmith boxes are painted entirely by hand, with reliefs and engravings brought out by drybrushing. That is why no two pieces are ever strictly identical, and it is deliberate. On a series, though, you want the variations to read as nuances, not as gaps.

The solution fits in one sentence: mention in the order comment that your boxes form a series. Paint batch matching is available on request, for a consistent look from one box to the next. Sitting side by side on the table, they answer each other instead of clashing.

If your playgroup leans towards vivid colours and sharp contrasts, the Ironsmith finish in full colour 3D printing is homogeneous by nature, with artwork impossible to achieve by hand. Our Inksmith or Ironsmith comparison will help you settle it as a group.

Every player gets a signature

Once the shared base is set, each player personalizes their copy. The optional lid engraving is the most direct tool: a name, a table nickname, the deck's title. Colours do the rest, with eleven box colours including the Starlight glitter effects and the full paint palette.

For Commander tables running several decks, Proteus adds another dimension: one base per player, with magnetic panels and 3D sculpted medallions that swap in seconds to give each deck its own face. A matching set of Proteus boxes equips a playgroup for years.

And whatever the formula, every box carries the same fundamentals: up to 125 double sleeved cards, a snap fit closure with no magnet on the lid, premium PLA 3D printing and hand finishing in our workshop in France.

Getting organised

The simplest setup is one person placing the whole order: that is what lets you request paint matching across the set and receive everything at once. Production takes 5 to 10 working days, premium finishes can add a few more, then tracked shipping leaves France for anywhere in the world. If the series needs to be on the table for a playgroup anniversary or an in-house league final, order with margin.

Every piece is photographed before shipping, and if the box you receive does not match the configurator preview, it is repainted or remade at our expense. More than 1,500 boxes sold and a 4.9/5 rating across 319 verified Etsy reviews: matching series are already travelling to plenty of tables. Cube curators have known the formula for a while, as our article on storing a draft cube can attest.

One last advantage, and not the smallest: the configuration stays saved in the Forge. A new player joins the table six months later? Their matching box is a few minutes away.
